The cause papers, so named by Canon Purvis who first indexed them, are housed in the Borthwick Institute of Historical Research, York, and are arranged by file, each file consisting of one or more pieces of parchment or paper. Sometimes these are only indifferently preserved. Nearly six hundred files exist for the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. They are classed by century, that is E = fourteenth, F = fifteenth, and G = sixteenth century. The files are also numbered, but these numbers do not follow a strict chronological order. Sometimes more than one file refers to the same action. This is especially true of multi-party cases. The files used within this study are tabulated below. The cause papers used have been divided according to whether the action relates principally to an urban or a rural location and the place of residence of the parties and witnesses have been specifically indicated where these are larger towns by the abbreviations listed below. The date of the litigation has also been included after the call number for reference purposes, though this is not an integral part of the call number. Files for which no depositions survive were in general discarded, but occasionally they contained valuable material despite the loss of the actual depositions. Such instances are indicated by a dagger (†).
