In compiling this table, I follow in the main the descriptions of the Tudor volumes in the History of Parliament series (individual biographies and 1509– 58 I, PP– 190–3, 1558–1603 I, pp. 246–50). I disagree with or would wish to supplement their analyses in numerous details, but the following are our most significant differences:

(a) I contest HP’s identification of John Harrison (1547 Dunwich) who is surely the resident burgess of that name. If so, Thomas Heydon cannot have been MP for Dunwich in a by–election in 1548.

(b) HP fail to stress that Humphrey Wingfield (Ipswich 1523) was an habitual Ipswich resident.

(c) HP miss the important fact that Edward Coke (Aldeburgh 1588) was lawyer for the Howard family (above, Ch. 8, n. 29).

(d) Anthony Wingfield I (Orford 1571) is wrongly identified; he was brother–in–law of Francis Sone (PCC 41 Pyckering) and brother of Sir Robert Wingfield of Letheringham.

(e) Philip Gawdy (Sudbury 1601) was a relative of the Fortescue family and resident at Chilton–by–Sudbury at the time, so he should not be regarded as an absentee courtier (PRO, STAC 5 S1/6, S26/11, S28/19).

(f) Francis Hervey (Aldeburgh 1597) is wrongly identified by HP: see above, Ch. 8, n. 46.
