Some of the arguments published in this volume were first adumbrated at a joint British Academy/University of St Andrews Symposium (‘9/11: Ten Years On’) held in London on 2 September 2011. Both the British Academy and the University of St Andrews generously contributed to the funding of that event, which was held at the Academy itself. In addition to thanking those institutions (and also those contributors to this volume who spoke on that day), I would like to express my gratitude to the following people for their invaluable help in making that Symposium and also this book a possibility: Professor Sir Adam Roberts, Professor Louise Richardson, Jason Burke, Gillian Duncan, Professor Sir Lawrence Freedman, Professor Charles Townshend, Professor John Anderson, Professor Nick Rengger, James Rivington, Brigid Hamilton-Jones and Tim Brassell. Colleagues and students at the Handa Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence (CSTPV) at the University of St Andrews have richly informed my thinking on terrorism and counter-terrorism, and to them also I express my profound thanks.
