Letter from Chris Wickham, Vice-President

April 23, 2014

For over a hundred years, the British Academy’s books – published through Oxford University Press – have made a unique contribution to scholarship. We are delighted that these works will now be able to reach a wider readership, worldwide, through their inclusion within University Press Scholarship Online.

The British Academy is an independent national academy of Fellows elected for their scholarly eminence. It seeks to champion and foster academic excellence and achievement, and to advance new ideas and developments, across all the disciplines in the humanities and social sciences.

As part of this mission, the British Academy has always produced its own publications. Series such as the flagship Proceedings of the British Academy contain some of the most important essays in the humanities and social sciences, by academics of the highest distinction. And the Academy also looks to bring on the next generation, through our publication of monographs by the best of today’s early-career scholars. These are the sorts of publications that make up the initial list of 145 titles in British Academy Scholarship Online (all published between 2002 and 2013) – a list that will be added to annually.

Quality is paramount for us throughout. The British Academy follows rigorous assessment processes to ensure that all the publications in British Academy Scholarship Online maintain the highest standards of excellence.
