Jean Gottmann was one of the great human geographers of a generation reared in the classic school of French regional study. His achievement was to apply the insights and synthetic capacities of that school to illuminate the geography of the United States, his second adopted country. He came to Britain to make his third academic home, receiving there the highest academic accolade his hosts could confer upon him; altogether, a true academician. No other geographer was simultaneously Fellow of the British Academy and Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur.
