This lecture discusses the problems raised by the German special development, also termed as ‘Sonderentwicklung’. It considers all of the content of the debates in Germany over the last two-hundred years regarding the character of this alleged special development. It looks at the response to this debate outside of Germany, and concludes with a discussion on what these debates tell about the way people look at the histories of nations.
