This lecture discusses the close connection among war and culture, education and destruction, politics and poetry, and spirit and violence. It studies one aspect of this connection, which is the traditional overestimation of culture at the expense of politics that has long shaped German history. It is shown to have not fully disappeared in present times.

Keywords:   overestimation of culture, German history, war and culture, spirit and violence, education and destruction, politics and poetry
