This chapter asks what the heroification of Nelson immediately after his death entailed. What conflicting images were created, in text and visual media, perhaps continuing the ways in which Nelson himself had manipulated his image during his lifetime? Contrasting official with popular commemoration, and exploring their interaction, it presents a nuanced picture of ‘national’ commemorations.
