The Child in Poetry: Foundlings, Lostlings, Changelings
The Child in Poetry: Foundlings, Lostlings, Changelings
2005 Warton Lecture on English Poetry
This lecture discusses children out of place, and talks about how children in general, from the eighteenth century until contemporary times, came to be seen as always out of place. Foundlings, lostlings, and changelings are studied in this lecture, and three key dates — 1739, 1872, and 1926 — are examined. The lecture also tries to show how ideas on children formed poetry, and how poetry formed ideas about children.
