The papers brought together in this volume are the product of many years of collaboration between scholars belonging to the EQUALSOC Network of Excellence. EQUALSOC was originally funded by the European Union's Sixth Framework Programme. Its aims are: to stimulate high-quality comparative European research on social cohesion and its determinants; to provide an infrastructure for training the rising generation of young researchers in the skills of comparative research; and to facilitate access to the most recent results of research for the wider research community and for policy-makers. We are very grateful to the network and its funders for their encouragement and support. We are particularly grateful to Chris Whelan, Robert Erikson, Duncan Gallie, Gøsta Esping-Andersen, Chiara Saraceno.
