This volume derives from a conference held in Oxford on 5–6 April 2016, as part of the work of the Lexicon of Greek Personal Names project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. I am grateful to the British Academy for undertaking the publication of this volume, as also for supplementary financing for the Lexicon of Greek Personal Names project, to its publication staff and to Elizabeth Stone of Bourchier for their courteous assistance, and to Michelle Tilling for admirable copy-editing. The theme of the conference was suggested by Jean-Sébastien Balzat, researcher on the project and now a contributor to the volume, who also, with the two other researchers at that time, Richard Catling and Edouard Chiricat, had a key role in planning the event.
